lowercase vs. Uppercase.

i was staying clear of this battle, because i don’t think it’s particularly interesting, or important. there are two well-established grammar-camps : prescriptive & descriptive. while i’m pretty committed to the second, i see the merits of each. however, reading last night, i came across this appropriate bit from mr. proust in a letter to a friend:

I’m not making fun of your friend, I assure you. I know how intelligent and learned he is. It’s a question of ‘doctrine.’ This man who is so sceptical has grammatical certainties. Alas, there are no certainties, even grammatical ones…Only that which bears the imprint of our choice, our taste, our uncertainty, our desire and our weakness can be beautiful.

So… it will obviously be noted that proust used capitals, and i’m not suggesting that grammar is useless, but… i do find periods followed by uppercase letters a bit redundant. ( via marco )
