This is a Lichtenberg Figure, named for Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, who discovered them in the eighteenth century. The fractal pattern is created by applying a high-voltage to plexiglass which results in the electrical current taking a diffusion-limited random-walk through the plexiglass due to dielectric breakdown at high potentials.
