thanks, soulja boy!
so… despite the fact that soulja boy’s album is uniformly horrible, with the sole exception of the single - Crank That (Soulja Boy) - it did the service of reminding me with it’s title - Souljaboytellem.com - of the earlier and far greater web-inspired rap album - www.thug.com - by Trick Daddy. I hadn’t listened to this album since 1999 or thereabouts. It’s pretty solid with some standout tracks… Nann Nigga? Yep! Anyway, listening to it… I’m impressed by trick’s early adoption of url-themed album titles. This album came out in 1998, and, while the dot-com economy was in full swing, it hadn’t inspired too much pop culture at that point. Though the album title doesn’t overtly influence the album’s content, with the exception of the intro and outro tracks which bookend the album proper and evoke AOL-era dial-up internet with “Login” and “Logout”… you can compare this to the later, web-jam of Paul Wall - Internet Going Nutz - a ballad to all the teen honies Paul seduces in online Chat rooms. Anyway… I read on wikipedia that Soulja Boy produced his album himself using only FruityLoops - which may explain the repetive beats on the album, but doesn’t mediate the resounding fact that he should have just put out a single and slept on the album.
