i saw this and think it’s swell. i had heard a while ago about a drought in india that was severly affecting the country and that, contemporaneously, coca-cola was producing some astronomical quantity of waste-water to produce coke at their india facilities - you can read about that here, at the sanfran gate. anyhow, when i read that.. it got me thinking about what goes into what we consume and how we really know very little about the manufacturing processes the products we purchase go through. So, for example, we know how many grams of sugar a 12 oz. can of Coke contains, but nothing about the manufacturing history of that item. eg How many gallons of waste water. So.. that made me think of a movie in the spirit of Traffic that, instead of covering Drugs from different perspectives, gave us a more complete perspective on everyday products and their histories. Anyway, i then had a dream and connected it with Gravity’s Rainbow (somehow) and wrote about it here on flickr, for whatever that’s worth. but! anyway.. i like this. in a similar vein, the new movie on corn - king corn - looks great. all about the US Farm Bill, which is f’d. One last thing, a project i’ve thought of, but which is unfeasible for anyone but the most dedicated and well-equipped artist is this :
get a warehouse, then live for a year, as you normally would but, somehow gather the waste products from everything you purchase (directly or indirectly) in the warehouse with you… i think there’s a ton that goes on behind the scenes and i wish there was a little more transparency so we could make better informed decisions as consumers. there are probably better ways to display and encapsulate this information and i’m sure someone will figure it out soon, but that’s my best for now… internet - i am willing you to answer this very real need.
